All About That Mahj:
Mah Jongg is a Chinese tile game from the 1800s that came to the United States in the 1920s. There were many variations (and still are!) but in 1937 a group of Jewish women got together and created a standardized set of rules and what is now known as the National Mah Jongg League. Every year they release a new playing card with new hands to keep everyone on their toes!
As an American Mah Jongg Instructor, I strictly teach by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules. This ensures you can play anywhere: tournaments, leagues, fundraising and charity events, open plays, and other groups with confidence in your knowledge and skills.

Hi, I'm Jillian!
I learned how to play Mah Jongg when I was 8 years old from my mom (on the 1992/1993 NMJL card!), and I’ve been playing on and off ever since. My grandmother had a weekly game with the women from our synagogue, and both my mom and aunt teach - it’s in my blood!
I am a proud member of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild. The badges symbolize my dedication to teaching with accuracy, integrity, and respect for the game’s official guidelines and rules.
When I’m not teaching, thinking, or talking about Mah Jongg, I work for Scenery Bags, a company dedicated to rescuing materials from Broadway, National Tours, and Regional Theatres that would otherwise be thrown away. Scenery Bags upcycles these items into bags, jewelry and accessories.
When work is done, you can find me at home with my husband, young boys, and dogs. And yes, I’ve forced them all (including the dogs) to be involved in the Mah Jongg world. Ha!
